Marketing in the Agent Era

A letter from the founders of Surface Labs.

To the marketing teams building the next generation of B2B companies,

The way buyers find software is changing faster than most teams realize. The dominant discovery mechanism of the last two decades (a person, a search bar, a few open tabs) is being replaced by agents. In ten years, most of the research that happens before a sales conversation won't be done by a human at all.

The instinct, when growth slows, is to spend more. But agents don't click ads, scroll LinkedIn, or get nurtured by a 7-email drip. They retrieve, compare, and decide across dozens of vendors in seconds. The audience for the standard B2B playbook is shrinking, and dumping more money into it is not the answer.

We believe the next decade of marketing will be defined by one shift: the buyer's first interaction with your company will be machine-mediated, and the companies that win will be the ones whose marketing was designed for that.

That means content structured to be retrieved and cited by AI, not just ranked by Google. A website that identifies and responds to visitors in real time. Attribution that works. And marketing treated as an engineering problem: systems, not headcount.

Surface Labs is building the operations layer for this shift. Content Ops and Lead Ops, connected, measured, and run as infrastructure. Our entire marketing team holds computer science degrees. We don't run marketing on intuition. We run it on systems, data, and code, and that's the standard we're building toward for every team we work with.

The teams that win the next decade won't be the ones with the biggest budgets. They'll be the ones who saw the shift early and rebuilt for it.

Surface Labs is here to help you do that.
