What is marketing?

Marketing is the work of getting the right people to know, trust, and choose your product. "Types of marketing" is just the set of channels and motions teams use to do that — each with its own economics, feedback loop, and best-fit audience.

There is no single correct type. Most B2B teams run a portfolio and shift budget toward whatever is compounding.

The main types

  • Content marketing — publishing useful material (articles, guides, this glossary) so buyers find you while researching. Compounds slowly, then all at once.
  • Inbound marketing — the broader motion of pulling buyers in with content, SEO, and offers rather than interrupting them.
  • Outbound marketing — proactively reaching prospects through cold email, ads, or calls. Fast to start, pays only while you spend.
  • Paid media — buying attention on search and social. Predictable, measurable, and gone the day you stop.
  • Product-led marketing — the product itself drives acquisition through free tiers, trials, and sharing loops.
  • Field & event marketing — conferences, dinners, and webinars that trade reach for depth of relationship.
  • Lifecycle marketing — nurturing existing leads and customers toward the next action with email and in-product messaging.

Why it matters

Picking the wrong type burns budget. A niche, high-ACV product rarely wins on broad paid social; a self-serve tool rarely needs a field team. The job is to match the motion to how your buyers actually decide — and to stop funding channels that don't compound.

Whatever mix you run, the payoff shows up as leads — so how you capture, qualify, and route them matters as much as the channel. See more playbooks on the Surface blog.
